Update from Bernabi

Greetings from Bernabi where the new year is moving fast!  Below are a few updates that I hope help to generate conversations at home over the weekend!

Last week’s PBIS assembly was a busy one where we introduced our next school wide focus: “Be true to you.”  While we often teach about kindness to others, we are encouraging students to identify their own positive traits and take pride in what makes them unique and special.  This would be a great dinner conversation, especially if you can model this positive self-reflection for your child!

If you didn’t already hear, we also introduced our next school wide fundraiser at our last PBIS assembly: The Polar Plunge!  This incredible event is a “cool” way to raise money to support the Special Olympics, and if you are interested in seeing me take the plunge in Lake Ontario on February 11, be sure to support your child in the fundraising activities that will take place in school during the week of February 5.  We will have a lemonade sale, a hat day and a coin collection competition, all of which go toward supporting local athletes in competing in the Special Olympics, and secures me a place in the lake!

The Bernabi Parents Association would like to invite all Bernabi girls to its annual winter dance, which has been renamed the Royal Dance for 2018.  Details were sent home last week, but please know that Bernabi girls in grades K - 5 are invited to attend and bring with them a special person of their choice!  My daughter Michela and I will be there with our dancing shoes on and hope to see you as well on Friday night, February 2 at 7:00 pm.

Ever heard of Global School Play Day?  Bernabi is working in grade level teams to create a developmentally appropriate plan for all students to participate in this initiative on Friday, February 2.  You will hear more about this from your child’s teacher in the weeks to come, but know that our focus in participating is to offer students an opportunity to utilize 21st century skills such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity in a purely social setting through organized game play.

That’s all for now—stay warm and thank you for your ongoing support!

Sincerely,

David Caiazza
