Update from Bernabi

December 7, 2018

Greetings from Bernabi where we are rolling through December quickly!  I have a lot to share, so I'll get right into things...

With the holiday season upon us, I am proud to announce that Bernabi's annual Giving Tree is up in our main entrance and loaded with ornaments that you can grab to help us unite the community in support of a tremendous cause: The Willie Bee Foundation.  For those who don't know, the Willie Bee Foundation was founded in memory of Spencerport native William Beeman and supports families in our community who have a child facing a life threatening illness.  Here's how it works: stop by Bernabi, grab an ornament from the tree, purchase the gift card noted on the ornament in any amount of your choice, bring the gift card back to Bernabi by December 21, then feel great about supporting our community!  And since I know I will be seeing many of you at tonight's BPA Pizza with Santa event, our timing couldn't be better!

With the buzz of the holidays, we took time to slow down this week and revisit our PBIS matrix, which outlines the positive expectations we hold for our students across each setting around the school.  If you're looking for a dinner discussion starter, do me a favor; click here and ask your child about what it looks and sounds like to be respectful, responsible and ready to learn at Bernabi!

It wouldn't be the holiday season if it wasn't cold outside, so I thought it might be a good time to revisit our weather guidelines that teachers use to make decisions about daily recess:

Temperature/Wind Chill     Guidelines

Below 10 degrees                 Indoor Recess
Below 15 degrees                 Shortened Recess
Below 32 degrees                 Gloves and Hats to go outside
Below 50 degrees                 Coat and long pants
Below 60 degrees                 Jacket or long sleeves

Thank you in advance for helping to make sure your children dress appropriately for the weather: hats, gloves/mittens, and boots are essential to keep the children safe and warm during the winter months. If you have any questions regarding recess please contact your child’s teacher.

Are you a fan of holiday music?  Then consider coming out this Wednesday night for our winter concert!  Our band, chorus and show choir have been practicing their little hearts out and have a wonderful performance ready to share with you!  Many thanks to parents for your support of our music program and for your help in getting kids to school early and staying late.  As you know, supervision is a challenge in the mornings and we appreciate your help in dropping your kiddos off between 7:55 and 8:00 for early band on Friday.  The cafeteria will be open should students arrive earlier, however, please know that there is no supervision until 7:55 am.

Believe it or not, Bernabi faculty and parents are already hard at work planning this Spring's "Bernabi Reads" week, and it is my pleasure to announce that our theme for 2019 is: Disney!  Here is my shameless plug for support: if you happen to have any Disney themed decorations, books or paraphernalia of any kind that you are willing to donate, please let me know or send it in with your child--thank you in advance!

That's all for now, but I want to leave you with a special video treat: our latest Bernabi Broadcast!  Click here to enjoy!

Sincerely,

David Caiazza
