Good afternoon,
While my regularly scheduled e-news update is below, I wanted to start with a quick thank you for the numerous phone calls and e-mails I received today based on the Connect Ed message parents received regarding the rumors stemming from the high school this morning. I cannot thank you enough for reaching out and allowing us the opportunity to reassure you that your children are safe, sound and learning here at Bernabi. As always, never hesitate to reach out to us with your concerns; our partnership is important to me and I am grateful for every opportunity I have to work with you and your children. With that, on to my regular update...
Greetings
from Bernabi where February break is upon us! It was wonderful to see so
many of you here in school on Valentine’s Day—we always appreciate your support
and love having you here at Bernabi! I have a few brief notes for you and
your children to discuss during the week off!
First
up: a focus on hallway behavior. If you’ve visited our school recently,
or at any point this year, you may have noticed me sitting in our
hallways. Not only do I enjoy visiting students in our classrooms and
cafeteria, but our hallways are another important place to reinforce the
positive expectations our school holds for respectful and responsible
behaviors. Thank you in advance for having a conversation with your child
about the importance of walking in our hallways vs. running, keeping our hands
to ourselves and our feet on the ground, and for showcasing their best hallway
behavior at all times, including individual bathroom trips as well as walking
in line to the cafeteria or to specials classes with the entire class.
Calling all musicians!
As you know, our district, Bernabi in particular, has always had a strong and
successful music program. That said, we are facing a supply and demand
concern and are looking to accept any instrument donations you may be able to
provide. If you happen to have any flutes, clarinets, saxophones,
trumpets, trombones or percussion kits that you are no longer using, please
know that we will gladly accept them in exchange for a tax donation letter from
the district.
Get ready to jump: This week
during PE classes we kicked off our annual Jump Rope For Heart
initiative! Information should have made its way home to you by now, but
know that any donations go to fund research by the American Heart Association.
Stay tuned for more details!
What are your plans for
February break? Whether you are traveling or staying home and having a
little family fun, consider sending me a picture or two for our next Instagram
initiative! I will kick things off by posting a few pictures of my family
down in Washington DC, where we will be for the first part of the week.
Our children are huge fans of museums and we are all looking forward to
visiting some of the best in the world! Send me your pics at [email protected]
and I’ll get them up to share with our Bernabi community! No matter what
your plans are: enjoy a little extra time together and be safe!
I would like to end this week
by thanking the numerous parents who have reached out to me over the last two
days following the tragic events in Florida. I truly appreciate the
dialogue around school safety and I am always open to hearing your thoughts and
suggestions on anything we can continue to improve on. Since many have
asked, I thought it would be a good time to remind everyone about the numerous
emergency response drills that we practice throughout the school year. In
addition to the common evacuation/fire drill, Bernabi completes a total of 12
emergency drills across five categories including shelter-in-place,
hold-in-place, lockout and lockdown. Each drill is designed to support
students from a variety of emergency situations and threats, both inside and
outside of the school, and by practicing these drills throughout the year, we
support the readiness of students, faculty and staff to respond to any
situation quickly and safely. Thank you for your ongoing support around
the most essential of needs, safety.
Sincerely,
David Caiazza
Principal
