Greetings from Bernabi where it’s been a busy week!  I wanted to share some of the details with you here as well as look ahead at more fun to come!

On Tuesday, Bernabi officially kicked off a partnership with Nazareth College in hosting a site-based course for its future teachers!  Led by professors Jennie Schaff and Janice Fortuna and with the support of our fourth and fifth grade teachers, a small group of Nazareth College students will be learning at Bernabi from both inside of our school and inside of our classrooms!  Similar to work-based placements and student teaching, a component of this program will have undergraduate students earning field hours by volunteering in our classrooms, and I know that I can speak on behalf of the school when I say that this is a true win-win for all parties!

Have you ever heard of the “Nation’s Report Card?”  On Thursday, a small group of Bernabi fourth grade students participated in the National Assessment of Educational Progress, from which results will be compiled to support a snapshot look at America’s schools!  I truly appreciate the support I received from parents in terms of our incredible participation rate and I am so proud of our students for trying something new and different!

As I mentioned in my last e-news, and as I am sure you have heard by now from your classroom teachers, today Bernabi is participating in Global School Play Day!  After exploring this initiative with my team leaders, we decided to capitalize on this day to take a break from screen time, and offer our students an opportunity to utilize 21st century skills such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity in a purely social setting through organized game play.  While students won’t have their laptops today, teachers will be posting pics on Instagram, so stay tuned to see the fun!

For our Bernabi girls: don’t forget, tonight is The Bernabi Parents Association Sweetheart Dance!  This is a wonderful annual event for you and a special adult to enjoy dancing, crafts, photo booth pictures and refreshments.  If you did not have a chance to buy tickets in advance, worry not, you can still purchase at the door and the cost is $15 per family.  Michela and I will see you there!  While you are in the building, please take a moment to check out our large collection of lost and found clothing items.  As we have done in the past, anything that has not been claimed after several months will be donated to a local charity.

A reminder that next week Bernabi goes all-in to support fundraising efforts for the Special Olympics by way of the Polar Plunge!  Details on Jar Wars and other efforts are below and remember the goal: $5,000 and I’m jumping into Lake Ontario on Sunday, February 11!

  • Monday, February 5             donate your pennies

  • Tuesday, February 6              donate your nickels

  • Wednesday, February 7       donate your dimes

  • Thursday, February 8           donate your quarters

  • Friday, February 9                donate any loose change plus a special hat day for $1.00 donation

There is also a lemonade sale on Tuesday, February 6 for grades K – 2 and on Wednesday, February 7 for grades 3 – 5.  The cost  $.50 per cup.

I’d like to leave you this week with the latest edition of the Bernabi Broadcast!  Over the past few months, students in grades 3-5 have been gathering highlights of things happening at  Bernabi and showcasing them in-house through a broadcast.  The students are creating the content, writing the scripts and filming the amazing work being done.  Click here to take a look!

Enjoy and have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

David Caiazza
